Another Anime Con

October 6, 2017 by Sarah

I have a few messages asking when I might be around in the Americas to sign things and see my lovelies there, and I will have more news about that soon… but I also have news RIGHT NOW for VERY SOON. I will be in Manchester, New Hampshire, for Another Anime Con on October 13-15, […]

IN OTHER LANDS NOW OUT IN THE LAND!

August 15, 2017 by Sarah

So, IN OTHER LANDS is out today! The book has received two starred reviews, one from Kirkus and one from Publishers’ Weekly, which is a shedload of starriness! I have already bragged on the Kirkus review on twitter, but please run your eye over this Publisher’s Weekly review! ‘Elliot Schafer is a small-for-his-age 13-year-old who […]

I Have A New Book Out in August! or, HOW THE STORY TURNED

June 7, 2017 by Sarah

I have some news! But first of all, I would like to thank everyone who sent good wishes about my bad news. I owe about a million messages, but I have been bowled over by the kindness of both friends and strangers, and even though sometimes that kindness made me cry, it has also helped […]

HOW I FOUND OUT

November 3, 2016 by Sarah

At the beginning of this year, my best friend and I drove down the Great Ocean Road. We went around a curve in the road and I drew in my breath because the forests were laid out before me in a startling contrast of gold lace against shadow. The next moment I realised, with another […]

TWO MORE (VERY EXCITING I THINK) EVENTS FOR ME

May 7, 2016 by Sarah

EVENT 1 Transgression: Writing On the Edge of the Acceptable From YA to fantasy to romance, six bestselling authors explore what it means to push boundaries within genres, and to tackle taboo topics in their fields. What happens when writers foray into the forbidden? What does it mean to ‘transgress’ in a novel, and how […]

  • These are strange and concerning times but I hope there’s still room for celebration. Happy Pride my darling doves! #pride #pridemonth #hereeveryday
  • Took my little bro to #hamptoncourtpalace for his birthday - not for the historic sights but for the #kaceymusgraves concert! It had everything - cowboy hats, women in fountains, my historical re-enactments nobody asked for… #happybirthday
  • Next great book of the vacay is @authorjenlynnbarnes’ The Inheritance Games which I am also behind the times on! Jennifer Lynn Barnes is a genius who introduced a great deal of the world wide web to the concept of parasocial relationships, and in this book she does something very cool with structure. (To go all writer insider baseball with you.) There are 80+ chapters and they are very short but each is a tiny treasure chest which holds at least 2 of the following: a mystery, an interestingly bad turn, or a shockingly good event. Sometimes 2 mysteries, sometimes 1
  • I love losing myself in a book and in these times of doom scrolling it’s tougher. On vacation I also give myself a chance to escape into fiction. I know many read Elena Ferrante before me (there is a TV show!) but this was the first read I loved on holiday. Favourite line: ‘So I was second in everything. I hoped that no one would ever realise it.’ I think we’ve all felt like that—and I love how the book tilts and swings, making it clear both girls feel this way at times and at other times or at the
  • My quest met with success! I acquired a @blackholly of my very own. I fully cried. I witnessed my first event after lockdown in which Holly and @say_shannon were superb speaking of locating the reality in fantasy and the fear & thrill of what to write next. #BookofNight is the bestselling hardback of 2022! Watch us wave it! Then @elizabetheulberg brought me and Holly to see llamas. You never expect the llamas of London… (Llamas not pictured as I lost my phone. It was returned by a kind stranger. Holly: You have not changed.) Thank you London. My dears, I
  • Got a little distracted from my quest by @elizabetheulberg and I viewing the glories of London— obviously, monuments, huge flower sculptures of corgi dogs, and pie. Mmm. Pie. #londontown #authorsofinstagram
